We read the news about punks being apprehended and detained in the Aceh region of Indonesia recently, and like many of you, were extremely disturbed at the thought of the police sweeping these kids off the street, shaving their hair, and forcing them into some sort of bullshit military training to deprogram them. We are privileged to live in a society where we are free to express ourselves as we wish, and while the US and other Western states have their fair share of police injustice, this incident is a harsh reminder to how good we really have it. That is why we are starting a small initiative in solidarity with our friends overseas, to let them know that we stand behind them and fully support them.
The mixtape is a crucial part of our subculture, and is solely responsible for the spread of punk influence worldwide. Mixtapes have introduced myself and many others to so many amazing bands, and the act of making them is one of the most sincere forms of friendship that exist in our world. So, we are asking our friends, our community, and anyone else who remotely gives a shit to make and donate one mixtape cassette to the kids in Aceh who were forced into detention solely for being punk. It’s a small gesture, but it means a lot to people who need our support. The content entirely of their choosing as long as it’s somewhat falling in the punk/hardcore/crust genre. If you have an awesome tape you never listen to anymore, or would like to make a new one specifically for this endeavor, that would absolutely rule. We are collecting these tapes to send out in early January, so your deadline to submit is December 30th, 2011. We know that the post office is fucked right now with holiday shipping, but right after xmas it frees up largely, so it shouldn’t be too much of an issue. Please try and pack as much music onto these tapes as possible, and try to avoid sending a short 10-min long demo cassette. This is an out-of pocket initiative for me (Rob) personally, and I’d like to make what we send as substantial as possible. And include your address in the tape, you might just make an international buddy out of the process!
***NOTE: Please do not send t-shirts, CD’s in Jewel Cases, vinyl, or anything else outside of a mixtape or a burned CDR in an envelope. We need all submissions to be media so we qualify for the right shipping. If you do send shirts or anything else we can’t use we will donate them elsewhere. We only have the bandwidth to deal with qualifying media. Thanks!***
You can send your mixtapes to our label address:

We are currently investigating the best way to get these over there safely, so if you have any specific ideas please email us and let us know. Thanks for listening, we really encourage your participation, and hope that something like this can never happen again.
Stay strong, stay fucking punk.
xoxo ABSOC
this is a great idea, thank you. i just sent a couple friends from jakarta emails asking their ideas for delivery. i’ll let you know when i hear something
Awesome Idea – will be sending from Sweden as soon as I can!
Will these tapes be allowed to be given to the kids in jail?
I think the most likely situation is that we get these tapes to a safe place, and then they can be distributed once the kids are released. We are investigating the best way to do this.
i’m indonesian,my band also participate in comp punk aid:jakarta calling(the one mike from the evacuate does),i would like also participate on your mix tape, i have lot of contacts in indonesia,if you still have space for the mix tape, let me know,or anything help that i can do to help..
cheers
Giovanni
ill be making one with all st louis punk bands
awesome idea, I will try to compile and send over a tape in time. up the global solidarity!
id love to do this! would they accept mix cds? or just tapes?
We are encouraging tapes since lots of people down there don’t have CD players still, but we will accept a CDR if it’s what you got!
do they have to be tapes? can they be cds?
see above.
What about any human rights activist working on stopping this gross subjugation of these people! What is being done to stop this oppression of self expression?
We’re not sure anything’s being done. Indonesia is a complicated country, I’ve been there myself. That police force is frightening.
Just curious, but is there a reason that we’re sending cassettes over CDs?
We are encouraging tapes since lots of people down there don’t have CD players still, but we will accept a CDR if it’s what you got!
Can we send CD/cassette walkmans, too? Cleaning out my grandfather’s house and he has a bunch of CD players and maybe one or two casette players too.
Hi there, please keep the submissions to just tapes or CDRs, we really don’t have the bandwidth to send anything else.
I would not advise mailing cassettes to Aceh. Indonesian mail is unreliable and things are often stolen or confiscated. I would suggest finding someone in Australia or Singapore who is traveling there soon and can bring the tapes in their luggage (and it should be someone who looks pretty conventional and won’t get searched at the airport).
thanks for the advice, we were thinking the exact same thing. we’ll have to do these in small batches as I imagine a large box of mixtapes probably won’t be highly regarded by officials.
I just saw on Facebook that Wormrot from Singapore is doing an Indonesian tour in mid-January. I know it puts an extra time crunch on things, but I figured I’d send that tidbit your way in case you want to get a hold of them about it.
There are some punks coming from America to Indonesia in January. Also, Frustration has a plan to tour. It’s true mail is shit here. Better to send them to an actual fedex or other shipping location and have someone pick them up.
I started a petition to release these kids at change.org – sign it at the following link! then REPOST! 64 Teenagers arrested for being “punks” – http://www.change.org/petitions/aceh-police-and-police-spokesman-gustav-leo-release-64-teenage-prisoners-being-detained-and-re-educated-2
Hi, We are holding a mix tape trade in San Francisco this coming Saturday. I have posted about your idea so that people may make duplicates of their mix tapes. I will send you all that I collect.
fucking rad, thanks so much for the support!
hey, i’d be totally stoked to participate…i’m in sf and have no idea about the mixtape trade saturday…
Can I send a grindcore mixtape?
haha, please do!
what about demo tape and albums of our own bands?
Hi, please try and send mixtapes with lots of music on them, you can put whatever you like, just try and fit as much music into one cassette as you can so shipping doesn’t totally kill us.
Hey, good idea. Can i send you some Money, my tapes are somewhere rotting in the cellar. Ginti
How on earth are you going to find those specifically affected??!
We have some friends that live in the area that hopefully have some connections.
I’m an American punk living in Indonesia currently and working on events/information/support for these guys. We have contacts. We know who is incarcerated. The punk community here is HUGE but like all punk communities it also winds up being very small.
What about cds?
I’ll try to record a tape (if my old recorder is still working), otherwise I’ll send a cd, with some portuguese punk bands in there.
Is metal cool too? Cause I saw those pictures and those kids look like some of the crudest fuckin’ metal heads.
yes, bring the metal fury!
[…] Aborted Society is doing something exemplary for the global punk community today, and we encourage CVLT Nation readers to show their support. You all have probably heard about the 64 punks in Aceh, Indonesia that are being held by police for “reprogramming” back into the religious drones that the state wants them to be. The police are acting under shariah law, they are clamping down on these kids’ human right to express their beliefs, and are claiming that they lack morals. As a show of punk solidarity, Aborted Society are collecting mixtapes from punk rockers around the world in order to show the Indonesian authorities that the world is watching them, and to combat the societal branwashing being imposed on Indonesian punks! Read about Aborted Society’s initiative below, send in your mixtapes, and stay tuned for a special CVLT Nation Aceh mixtape next week! […]
fucking amazing idea. I wish you luck with this, and of course i’ll be sending a couple of tapes over. Great work guys.

great idea we’ll be sending over our whole back catalogue. on tape
Geat idea – will send a mix! But concerning the mail ammount on christmas you’re deadline is nearly impossible to achieve for international supporters! Phil from Berlin, Germany
Hi Phil, we will be sending stuff out around the beginning of January, so try yr best, and from the looks of it, we may be doing this in waves if there’s this much support behind it. Cheers!
Oi we’ll be sending an oshawa punx compilation from Ontario soon. cheers. this is a brilliant idea for a shitty situation.
What language can they read? I want to write a message that can be understood.
Most of the street punks in Indonesia only speak Indonesian and local languages. But if you write it in pretty simple terms, there will some who can read it and translate for the others.
Living in Indonesia I’d assume they can at least read Bahasa Indonesia. Let me know if you need any help with that.
What about Cd-r’s some of us dont have tapes? i love the idea!
Try to link up with the Pyrate Punk Crues out there!!!!!!!!!!!!

[…] I do know that if I was raised a punk in a Muslim world, how I approached my faith would have been totally antithetical to how I’ve embraced being a Muslim now. I love my hyphenated identities in all their complicated messiness. I think the government in Indonesia needs to let these kids be kids. They are going to learn the hard way that brainwashing camp will only serve to have these punks rebel exponentially. You feel me? Then let’s dishoom back – with a mixtape. ABSOC…this is cool of you, we’ll try to get some stuff your way as well. Brad at Raunch records SLC.
I’ll be sending at least 4-6 mix tapes. Mostly of so cal hardcore punk and anything that’s super duper obscure.
hey, have just had a shed load of cassettes given to me, not sure what is in them yet, but i get the possibility some may be motorhead albums n stuff, any good to you?
Hi, please try to keep submissions to a mixtape, we want to be able to send as much content in as little space as possible. Cheers!
hej,
first of all, good to know that u re supporting them.im very suprising that more people(punks) out of Indonesia quickly respons this shit that the punks in in the country itself.
so, the kids in Indonesia still listening to the tapes/cassettes, that means still great idea because for sure those who ve been arrested are street punk whose not all the time got access from outside would be happy that they know if some people outside looking after them, and i dont think so that they can got the tapes and stuff while they re still in this prison…
All the best !!!
I´m preparing a package with a bunch of our records and shirts to send it out to support the Punk scene there. it may not be much coming from a small, unknown band like us, but I hope a lot of bands and labels and others join in and send stuff to let those people know that they are not alone and that this is about more than just music.
so if you find a good way to send stuff over there please let us know (would be easier than sending stuff to the states and then all the way there)
Hi, please try and keep your submissions to tapes, we don’t exactly have the bandwidth to send shirts and things like that, but please submit! cheers!
hey! I got that. I was going to ask for a contact info (once you get it) so I can send out our stuff directly here from Germany.
ye sure sending them in early january will be soon enough?
“They would spend 10 days getting rehabilitation, training in military-style discipline and religious classes, including Quran recitation, he said. Afterward, they’ll be sent home.”
according to this:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/asia-pacific/hard-line-indonesian-province-detains-punk-rockers-shaves-mohawks/2011/12/14/gIQAJ3qPtO_story.html
because of the holidays, post offices being crazy, the time it takes to make a decent mixtape, people mailing to us, and figuring out the logistics of getting these there safely at all, I think early January is about as good as it gets!
Excellent idea! But I’m afraid I can only make CDRs…would it be all right if I sent more than one?
sure thing, please only send in a paper or plastic sleeve/envelope. No jewel cases for CDRs. Thanks!
Done & done. 7 CDs on the way. I hope they like Dead Kennedys… 🙂
This is an awesome idea. The tapes can be I’m standard plastic cases, right?
yes that’s fine for cassettes for sure!
great idea! will send mine this week. is it ok to make some custom packaging with inserts along with the tape?
absolutely. Just try to keep it all in the dimensions of a single cassette if you can.
this is amazing! i hope this works out!
is there some media mail restriction on personalizing these? could i include a nice drawing or something?
Hi there, feel free to personalize them, just try to keep it within the confines of a traditional mixtape jewelcase.
What is you email address? I know how to make sure people wll receive tapes I send tapes to indonesia all the time. Let’s make this happen!
Hi, our email address is abortedsociety [at] hotmail [dot] com. Cheers, please write us and let’s try to figure this out!
Hey, this is an awesome idea, I’m sure there are going to be a ton of mixtapes going out but is there a possibility of getting the shipping address when you do have it. I’d like to send some guitar/bass strings and picks etc. I want to hear the shit that they’re playing!
sure thing.
More than anything, I would absolutely be more than glad to help these people out and crank out as many mixes as possible. Unfortunately, there are two things that discourage me from doing so: my musical diet is 90% goth rock, deathrock, post-punk, darkwave and other genres of that nature; and I can only burn CDs instead of tapes.
Would you suppose that making goth/deathrock mixes be perfectly fine or at least be put to some use? Please let me know.
-Mother Deathrocket
PLEASE send some deathrock! Everyone needs a lil’ goth in their day. CDRs are great, just don’t package in a standard jewelcase, try to keep it to a plastic sleeve or envelope.

Excellent idea!! I live in Bristol, UK and would be happy to put together a collection to send straight from here in the UK – and I know we’d get loads of contributions…what do you think? Whoever’s running this please get in touch with me through email…
I read an article a few daya ago that a bgi percentage of aceh policman are doing drugs. That explains a lot.

I have to say in switzerland (i’m swiss) i have to put my hairs down at the public school. My teachers told me my opinion don’t match with the opinion of the school. OK this isn’t that hard like going to a militairy programm but I think my privilege to have a own opinion isn’t guaranteed.
Any way I can help with shipping? I’ll work on sending some music but you guys are gonna take a hit with postage and I’d like to help..
kickstarter might be a good idea for this.
Hearing what happened broke my heart and further fueled my rage for tyranny but at the same time seeing this happen gives me hope. Fucking awesome!!
Don’t know if you saw this but someone just posted it online re: the mix tapes: IMPORTANT INFO:if you want to send mix tapes here are some important rules we must follow if we actually want them to be received:
1) do NOT include anything that could be intercepted as visually or printed “politically sensitive material”. i know its coooool BUT the government may never let it to the people you intend it to be received.
2) on the customs form you must mark it as a “gift” with low value -technically i read it’s quite high but just for everyone’s sake, declare it’s value as anywhere from $ 0.50 – $2.50 USD. They shouldn’t have any trouble with that.
_______this is quite important mainly because they can be taxed for anything that isn’t marked as listed above and my friend reported that is their highest concern with this exchange__________________
finally, about a mailing address, stay tuned for an update we are still trying to figure that one out. feel free to spread the word

So, can I burn some songs on a CDR and put it in a normal plastic CD-Case?
Hi, please try to keep packaging of CDRs to plastic sleeves or envelopes, we are trying to conserve space and weight so we don’t totally eat it on shipping. Thanks, ASR
is there a paypal or some kinda way to donate cash to help with shipping? i wanna make a tape but i could pitch a little to help fund it too, this is a rad idea and i wanna support it
Hi, we may end up having to do something like that depending on how many submissions we end up getting. I guess we’ll know more once they start rolling in!
A few of us bands in South Wales will be putting together a mixtape of the best bits of the scene here to send out, all we can hope for is that all of this music inspires people to get the fuck out of there, or encourages punks worldwide to set up camps outside of every single Indonesian embassy worldwide.
I’m so happy this shit is getting so much publicity! I’ve been living in Bandung, Indonesia for the last 15 years, we used to have the third biggest underground scene IN THE WORLD here in Bandung, incredible festivals an concerts. That all ended some 7 or 8 years ago, they really went for all the punks and other folks that were “different”. So many of these kids were tortured, raped and sometimes even murdered. A lot of them fled to other cities…. Used to be that you could get weed on every street corner, well, they murdered nearly every dealer they could find and went just as hard after users, I could fill pages full with stories here…. A urine test is enough to get you in a chair, tied down with a bunch of cops smoking meth and whatever they’ve got lying around, dancing to house music torturing you with electricity, bambu under fingernails, broomsticks up asses, whatever, I’m not making this up, this is what has been happening here in Bandung and Bandung isn’t the only place where this type of shit takes place… If you’re a female…. well… I think you can guess what might happen then…. They pick up prostitutes and give them three choices: A. Pay an amount that these girls just don’t have. B. Get send to those “re-education camps” near the city of Cirebon or C. Suck and fuck with all the guys that picked you up and their friends. You can guess what they usually choose…. I know quiet a few of these girls, I’m not one of their Johns so they talk to me and some of their stories make your hair stand up for real…. One of my best friends, a big African dude was murdered by them a few years ago for less then a gram of weed, they put a gun to his head and forced him to drink from a bottle, he got sick, went blind, became paralyzed and died three days later. I sat with him for three days while he was dying and helped carry his body out of the hospital and I still can’t shake that shit. He was healthy and strong as a bull, just had his beautiful baby boy… So maybe you’ll understand that it upsets me when I read that one out of every 10 cops in Aceh is using and they won’t get in any problems because of that. A Japanese guy is right now sitting in Bali looking at 15 years of hard time and a million dollar fine because he had 1,6 grams of weed…. Weed will get you on average twice the amount of jail time compared to being caught with meth or smack. Go figure…. I used to be the biggest pot-head in the world but now, if I even see that shit I’m out, I’m missing teeth because of some shit with those pigs myself…
Great what you guys are doing!!!! Like I said, it’s just great to see all the reactions from all over the world!!!
I’ll be putting together a CDR to send to you from over here in the UK. It’s a great thing that you are doing. I was sickened when I read what was happening to those kids. Cheers BH

Question about the first part of the journey (in my case, Aberdeen, Scotland on to Seattle): would it be better to send ABSOC heaps of folks’ mixtapes in ONE package, or to send every mixtape to you in small, individual packages? I want to get as many tapes as possible to Indonesia, confident I can get at least 5 folk here to make up mixtapes, but it would obviously be better and cheaper to send ONE package to ABSOC. Can send them all separately if needed though.
Well done, this is a great idea! Punks worldwide need to show Solidarity with the Banda Aceh punks having to live with this fascist shit.
a few other bands that will be touring asia, indonesia included, could help out with punk mail if you try asking them?

cool thanks
Can I send official cassette tapes?
I got a couple of albums I bought on cassette back in the day I can’t play anymore since I don’t have a cassette player. These kids look like they need some SNFU!
Hi, please refrain from sending official tapes, we want to keep these to mixes.
hey absoc ! i heard ya ! i think this is a good medium to bring back their passion bein a punkrocker… regardsless of what their background of bein a punk.. im a filipino, im from philippines, part of tha south east asian country.. livin here in tha Bay Area really condemns this kind of bullshit.. we’ve been thru this already where my friends hitch-hiked and toured tha beautiful mountains, and now are suspected as NPA(new peoples army), a communist army, by stereotyping their images, opened their bags and found punk records and images of punk, also some zines and books that tha philippine army thought they’re leftist, now they were captured and hurt, until one punk escaped and went to tha media and tells everything what happened. now they have been brought to justice, but u know not 100% justice been served.
we organized a show for them before for their legal papers and tryin to give a partey one of our friend who escaped.. he is in trauma that could not smile like he was before.
yep so, im goin to send a mixcd-r(and a piece of paper about the infos from tha bands i put on), that includes our bands recording and some good shit audios from hardcorepunkcrustpowerviolencegrind bands from tha philippines ! dont giveup aceh punx ! stay up !
This is awesome to see punks all over the world coming together for this. I’m spreading the word as much as I can. I got a few friends who were in 80’s hardcore bands helping me out with this as well. I’ll have a mixtape to ya A.S.A.P!
I’m assuming that you did your research but they do have cds. Shoot, when I was just on Lombok and Sumbawa the kids were listening to music on their phones.

I’d love to make a tape, but unfortunately I’m absolutely not into punk, so I don’t really know what to put on the mix..

Hey, i’m organising a mix tape collection (and hopefully collecting some donations to help towards your costs) tomorrow at a big punk festival that’s happening here in Sheffield, uk. I’ll get them posted to you next week but will probably miss the 30th deadline. If we collect enough cash to send a donation, how would it be best to get it to you? X
I’ve replied to a couple of messages here. I am an American punk living in Indonesia for almost a year. Cassettes are good but CDs/CDRs are fine too. Most punks here are telling me CDs might be better, if one punk has a computer then all the punks can share the music. MP3 format is best. I live in Java so I don’t know the specifics of the media they have access to in Aceh but I can find out soon. Thank you all so much for the support everyone. The punks I have come to know here in Indonesia are like family to me and it means a lot to these punks, even if they aren’t “allowed” to know it yet that there is so much international support.
Based on this wonderful idea we’d also like to ask people to send zines/stories etc. please send to sriaduh@gmail.com in PDF format and i can translate to Indonesian and we can give them to the kids in Aceh.
Also, if you don’t have the time or means to make a specific mix tape we would like to ask you to upload songs to Suncloud.com and send the link to bandungpyratepunxrecords@gmail.com. We have plans to make tapes here too.
The International support is overwhelming and encouraging .
UP THE PUNKS!
PS rob, thank you.
In addition, anyone can see my public updates on my facebook about this. (facebook slash taarnashred) Including a form letter to send to your local embassy or to the deputy mayor in Aceh. Please please do not send money. They already have pro bono lawyers and they open the mail here and will take money. If money is needed later we’ll send news about it.
I am in the works of creating a website, and would like to ask for video submissions from punks. Here in Indonesia (much like most of the world) punks have a bad reputation. All punks are viewed as low class, criminal thugs. Obviously this isn’t the case. I met with some friends tonight and we really want to re-educate people here on their concept of what punk is or isn’t. I’ll post again with details when I have the website up and running.
Cops are pretty f-ed up here it’s true, but punk is still alive and kicking. I also live in Bandung and I have been to shows where 2,000 mohawked kids show up. We often have problems with cops coming to shows and demanding bribe after bribe or they shut it down but we still find ways to have independent diy shows here.
Thanks again for the continued support. Our brothers and sisters will know they’re not alone!
sorry, taarnashreds haha.
I still can’t access it – I’m not a Facebook member, but it says ‘content not found’. Got anything else? Definitely interested in those form letters, for starters …

This is so great! Just like Taarna wrote, the international support is overwhelming and encouraging. It warms my heart. I have now sent messages both to the Indonesian Embassy here in Finland and also straight to the authorities in Aceh, as well as signed the petition on internet. I believe I’ll start making my mixtape tomorrow.
Solidarity for the Indonesian punks!

Where exactly are you sending this stuff?
Thank you for giving this brilliant idea. I am so upset to what happened to our brothers in Aceh. But I think you guys must consider about the security of the tapes shipping to Aceh. Make sure the regional government of Aceh would not shack or take the tapes off. Aceh government is really waging war against punk culture.
If there is someone who want to come to Aceh personally would be great.
thanks for your thoughts, we are working on a solution right now.
[…] You can read the full announcement, including details of the gifts which can be included in the shipments, here. […]
We’ll be shipping a box of goodies from Bend, Oregon real soon! It’s got CD-R’s and Tapes in paper envelopes without art. I hope it helps!

IS THIS STILL GOING ON?
yes, and there’s still time to get a tape in!
Would it be useless to send many CD’s with the same compilation?
i hope the deadline is the same thing as postmark date….ive been scramblin and am gettin 3 original mixtapes in the mail today. please accept them! its still the 30th!
i hope submit date is the same as postmark date cuz ive been scrambling and got three tapes done and putting them in the mail today!!!
i am indonesian, big thanks for everyone contributing to this project, fortunately, they are already sent home to their families, it’s great that you send tape cassettes, however cassettes are probably going to be difficult to play, because i think cassette players is much more expensive nowadays than mp3 players, and cds are cheaper and easier to manage, i think none of us have cassette player anymore, however i really appreciate what you guys did for my fellow indonesians, thank you and happy new year.
ps. excuse my english
Hey, I am picking up the mixtapes and bringing them back to indonesia. We can figure out a way to burn them to disc if that’s the case. 🙂

Is this going to be a continuing event? many people are still just finding out about this.
Can we still send in cd’s/tapes?
Hey, I just heard about this. I noticed you said you were going to be sending these in batches. Is it still alright if I make a few mixes? I’ll use good shipping to get them to you ASAP.

Hey … great idea. totally love it.
What can I do to help? I’m an Australian with some connections in the Aid world. I also have two friends that are in country at the moment.
A colleague put some questions to me, so if it’s ok with you, some brass tacks stuff?
Is there a tape-deck in the prison?
How are you delivering the tapes? Do you need someone to hand deliver them?
How many more do you need?
After you’ve opened up this channel of communication, are you planning on using it to offer more help?
Let me know.

Hello, I sent cd-s for Aceh in December on your adress..Do you have the news? Are the mixtapes and cd-s on their way to Indonesia? Hope they are.
Thanx!
can we get some update about this action? we’d like to contribute.
hey guys send us some info about how things are going? how many mixtapes did you receive?
While your intention is good it neglects the real basis of this situation which is the oppressive nature of Sharia law. The punk community has fallen into the predominant western sentiment of accepting all governing systems as equal and acceptable, and is using music as the focal point of a much larger problem. The propagation of punk the punk genre and advertisement for punk bands is a self-serving way to feel a part of a “revolution”. These tapes will not reach the people you intend and will not change the political structure that caused this incident.
Unfortunately I didn’t find this link until it was too late to submit a tape (today). I hope the project went well. I was actually wondering who you sent it too so that we can extend a similar effort in support and solidarity with our fellow punks in crisis. Thanks and cheers!
