Mixtapes for Aceh!

Aceh punks in detentionWe read the news about punks being apprehended and detained in the Aceh region of Indonesia recently, and like many of you, were extremely disturbed at the thought of the police sweeping these kids off the street, shaving their hair, and forcing them into some sort of bullshit military training to deprogram them.  We are privileged to live in a society where we are free to express ourselves as we wish, and while the US and other Western states have their fair share of police injustice, this incident is a harsh reminder to how good we really have it.  That is why we are starting a small initiative in solidarity with our friends overseas, to let them know that we stand behind them and fully support them.

The mixtape is a crucial part of our subculture, and is solely responsible for the spread of punk influence worldwide.  Mixtapes have introduced myself and many others to so many amazing bands, and the act of making them is one of the most sincere forms of friendship that exist in our world.  So, we are asking our friends, our community, and anyone else who remotely gives a shit to make and donate one mixtape cassette to the kids in Aceh who were forced into detention solely for being punk. It’s a small gesture, but it means a lot to people who need our support.  The content entirely of their choosing as long as it’s somewhat falling in the punk/hardcore/crust genre.  If you have an awesome tape you never listen to anymore, or would like to make a new one specifically for this endeavor, that would absolutely rule.  We are collecting these tapes to send out in early January, so your deadline to submit is December 30th, 2011.  We know that the post office is fucked right now with holiday shipping, but right after xmas it frees up largely, so it shouldn’t be too much of an issue.  Please try and pack as much music onto these tapes as possible, and try to avoid sending a short 10-min long demo cassette.  This is an out-of pocket initiative for me (Rob) personally, and I’d like to make what we send as substantial as possible.  And include your address in the tape, you might just make an international buddy out of the process!

***NOTE: Please do not send t-shirts, CD’s in Jewel Cases, vinyl, or anything else outside of a mixtape or a burned CDR in an envelope.  We need all submissions to be media so we qualify for the right shipping.  If you do send shirts or anything else we can’t use we will donate them elsewhere.  We only have the bandwidth to deal with qualifying media. Thanks!***

You can send your mixtapes to our label address:

Aborted Society Records
attn: Mixtapes for Aceh
1122 E. Pike Street #1377
Seattle, WA 98122-3934
USA

We are currently investigating the best way to get these over there safely, so if you have any specific ideas please email us and let us know.  Thanks for listening, we really encourage your participation, and hope that something like this can never happen again.

Stay strong, stay fucking punk.

xoxo ABSOC

    • rhadmin December 14, 2011 at 11:13 am - Reply

I think the most likely situation is that we get these tapes to a safe place, and then they can be distributed once the kids are released. We are investigating the best way to do this.

I would not advise mailing cassettes to Aceh. Indonesian mail is unreliable and things are often stolen or confiscated. I would suggest finding someone in Australia or Singapore who is traveling there soon and can bring the tapes in their luggage (and it should be someone who looks pretty conventional and won’t get searched at the airport).

    • ABSOC December 14, 2011 at 12:08 pm - Reply

thanks for the advice, we were thinking the exact same thing. we’ll have to do these in small batches as I imagine a large box of mixtapes probably won’t be highly regarded by officials.

I just saw on Facebook that Wormrot from Singapore is doing an Indonesian tour in mid-January. I know it puts an extra time crunch on things, but I figured I’d send that tidbit your way in case you want to get a hold of them about it.

There are some punks coming from America to Indonesia in January. Also, Frustration has a plan to tour. It’s true mail is shit here. Better to send them to an actual fedex or other shipping location and have someone pick them up.

  20. […] Aborted Society is doing something exemplary for the global punk community today, and we encourage CVLT Nation readers to show their support. You all have probably heard about the 64 punks in Aceh, Indonesia that are being held by police for “reprogramming” back into the religious drones that the state wants them to be. The police are acting under shariah law, they are clamping down on these kids’ human right to express their beliefs, and are claiming that they lack morals. As a show of punk solidarity, Aborted Society are collecting mixtapes from punk rockers around the world in order to show the Indonesian authorities that the world is watching them, and to combat the societal branwashing being imposed on Indonesian punks! Read about Aborted Society’s initiative below, send in your mixtapes, and stay tuned for a special CVLT Nation Aceh mixtape next week! […]

    hej,
first of all, good to know that u re supporting them.im very suprising that more people(punks) out of Indonesia quickly respons this shit that the punks in in the country itself.
so, the kids in Indonesia still listening to the tapes/cassettes, that means still great idea because for sure those who ve been arrested are street punk whose not all the time got access from outside would be happy that they know if some people outside looking after them, and i dont think so that they can got the tapes and stuff while they re still in this prison…
    All the best !!!

I´m preparing a package with a bunch of our records and shirts to send it out to support the Punk scene there. it may not be much coming from a small, unknown band like us, but I hope a lot of bands and labels and others join in and send stuff to let those people know that they are not alone and that this is about more than just music.

so if you find a good way to send stuff over there please let us know (would be easier than sending stuff to the states and then all the way there)

Would you suppose that making goth/deathrock mixes be perfectly fine or at least be put to some use? Please let me know.

Don’t know if you saw this but someone just posted it online re: the mix tapes: IMPORTANT INFO:if you want to send mix tapes here are some important rules we must follow if we actually want them to be received:

    1) do NOT include anything that could be intercepted as visually or printed “politically sensitive material”. i know its coooool BUT the government may never let it to the people you intend it to be received.

    2) on the customs form you must mark it as a “gift” with low value -technically i read it’s quite high but just for everyone’s sake, declare it’s value as anywhere from $ 0.50 – $2.50 USD. They shouldn’t have any trouble with that.
_______this is quite important mainly because they can be taxed for anything that isn’t marked as listed above and my friend reported that is their highest concern with this exchange__________________

finally, about a mailing address, stay tuned for an update we are still trying to figure that one out. feel free to spread the word

A few of us bands in South Wales will be putting together a mixtape of the best bits of the scene here to send out, all we can hope for is that all of this music inspires people to get the fuck out of there, or encourages punks worldwide to set up camps outside of every single Indonesian embassy worldwide.

  65. Henk Madrotter December 15, 2011 at 10:27 am - Reply

I’m so happy this shit is getting so much publicity! I’ve been living in Bandung, Indonesia for the last 15 years, we used to have the third biggest underground scene IN THE WORLD here in Bandung, incredible festivals an concerts. That all ended some 7 or 8 years ago, they really went for all the punks and other folks that were “different”. So many of these kids were tortured, raped and sometimes even murdered. A lot of them fled to other cities…. Used to be that you could get weed on every street corner, well, they murdered nearly every dealer they could find and went just as hard after users, I could fill pages full with stories here…. A urine test is enough to get you in a chair, tied down with a bunch of cops smoking meth and whatever they’ve got lying around, dancing to house music torturing you with electricity, bambu under fingernails, broomsticks up asses, whatever, I’m not making this up, this is what has been happening here in Bandung and Bandung isn’t the only place where this type of shit takes place… If you’re a female…. well… I think you can guess what might happen then…. They pick up prostitutes and give them three choices: A. Pay an amount that these girls just don’t have. B. Get send to those “re-education camps” near the city of Cirebon or C. Suck and fuck with all the guys that picked you up and their friends. You can guess what they usually choose…. I know quiet a few of these girls, I’m not one of their Johns so they talk to me and some of their stories make your hair stand up for real…. One of my best friends, a big African dude was murdered by them a few years ago for less then a gram of weed, they put a gun to his head and forced him to drink from a bottle, he got sick, went blind, became paralyzed and died three days later. I sat with him for three days while he was dying and helped carry his body out of the hospital and I still can’t shake that shit. He was healthy and strong as a bull, just had his beautiful baby boy… So maybe you’ll understand that it upsets me when I read that one out of every 10 cops in Aceh is using and they won’t get in any problems because of that. A Japanese guy is right now sitting in Bali looking at 15 years of hard time and a million dollar fine because he had 1,6 grams of weed…. Weed will get you on average twice the amount of jail time compared to being caught with meth or smack. Go figure…. I used to be the biggest pot-head in the world but now, if I even see that shit I’m out, I’m missing teeth because of some shit with those pigs myself…

Great what you guys are doing!!!! Like I said, it’s just great to see all the reactions from all over the world!!!

Question about the first part of the journey (in my case, Aberdeen, Scotland on to Seattle): would it be better to send ABSOC heaps of folks’ mixtapes in ONE package, or to send every mixtape to you in small, individual packages? I want to get as many tapes as possible to Indonesia, confident I can get at least 5 folk here to make up mixtapes, but it would obviously be better and cheaper to send ONE package to ABSOC. Can send them all separately if needed though.
Well done, this is a great idea! Punks worldwide need to show Solidarity with the Banda Aceh punks having to live with this fascist shit.

I’ve replied to a couple of messages here. I am an American punk living in Indonesia for almost a year. Cassettes are good but CDs/CDRs are fine too. Most punks here are telling me CDs might be better, if one punk has a computer then all the punks can share the music. MP3 format is best. I live in Java so I don’t know the specifics of the media they have access to in Aceh but I can find out soon. Thank you all so much for the support everyone. The punks I have come to know here in Indonesia are like family to me and it means a lot to these punks, even if they aren’t “allowed” to know it yet that there is so much international support.

Based on this wonderful idea we’d also like to ask people to send zines/stories etc. please send to sriaduh@gmail.com in PDF format and i can translate to Indonesian and we can give them to the kids in Aceh.

Also, if you don’t have the time or means to make a specific mix tape we would like to ask you to upload songs to Suncloud.com and send the link to bandungpyratepunxrecords@gmail.com. We have plans to make tapes here too.

The International support is overwhelming and encouraging .
    UP THE PUNKS!
    PS rob, thank you.

In addition, anyone can see my public updates on my facebook about this. (facebook slash taarnashred) Including a form letter to send to your local embassy or to the deputy mayor in Aceh. Please please do not send money. They already have pro bono lawyers and they open the mail here and will take money. If money is needed later we’ll send news about it.

I am in the works of creating a website, and would like to ask for video submissions from punks. Here in Indonesia (much like most of the world) punks have a bad reputation. All punks are viewed as low class, criminal thugs. Obviously this isn’t the case. I met with some friends tonight and we really want to re-educate people here on their concept of what punk is or isn’t. I’ll post again with details when I have the website up and running.

Cops are pretty f-ed up here it’s true, but punk is still alive and kicking. I also live in Bandung and I have been to shows where 2,000 mohawked kids show up. We often have problems with cops coming to shows and demanding bribe after bribe or they shut it down but we still find ways to have independent diy shows here.

Thanks again for the continued support. Our brothers and sisters will know they’re not alone!

While your intention is good it neglects the real basis of this situation which is the oppressive nature of Sharia law. The punk community has fallen into the predominant western sentiment of accepting all governing systems as equal and acceptable, and is using music as the focal point of a much larger problem. The propagation of punk the punk genre and advertisement for punk bands is a self-serving way to feel a part of a “revolution”. These tapes will not reach the people you intend and will not change the political structure that caused this incident.
