NUX VOMICA – Embrace the Cycles 7″

NUX VOMICA might be every record reviewers worst nightmare. Not because they aren’t a good band, on the contrary, they are too awesome. Their sound is almost impossible to describe, as it does not fit neatly into any predefined genre or pigeon hole. Instead they draw elements from every great form of heavy music, including metal, punk, crust, and hardcore. The result is ultimately discursive, heavy, uniquely original and totally epic, loaded with intensity, passion, and excellent musicianship. The two songs on this record are no exception. To me it feels like maybe they were listening to a bit more black metal when they wrote these, but maybe not. They also incorporate a viola for an extra layer of epic atmosphere. The lyrics are, as always, intelligent, insightful, poetic, contemplative, introspective, and a bit confusing. The cover art is as bleak and epic as the music, with a barren, desolate, foggy, hopeless looking photo of a decaying, partially deforested landscape. This 7” is a European tour release, limited to 500 copies, pressed on grey/brown marbled vinyl, so get this while you can. Another great release by this innovative band. (righteous)

ORDER OF THE VULTURE – Martyr for Nothing EP

Starting from the outside, this 7” is totally eye catching. It’s done in black, grey, red and white in a black metal-ish font. The cover has a robed skeleton and the back has the bands logo splitting the sleeve open down the middle opening up like shutters. The inside has a few old morbid photos and a separate full size lyric card. The first two songs seem to be written from the perspective of the undead, while the third is a tad more living, personal and emotional. All three tracks are fairly old, coming from a recording session in 2004 that were recently re-mastered and unleashed upon the public. Their style isn’t fresh and new, but it’s a rock solid, foot up on the monitor, head banging, throwing up the horns in your favorite black jeans, patched up vest and wrist to elbow spiked gauntlets sort of kick ass slab o’ pressed petroleum. If brutal driving crust with vocals that are heavily influenced by first generation black metal is you’re cup of tea, then you should grab this. There are only 550 pressed: 440 on red, 110 on black and somewhere in there are 50 that come in a hand crafted boxes with all sorts of bells and whistles that would drive any collector nuts. (Jake)

With all of the ills going in society, I find myself listening to music that reflects the things that are on my mind. The album from San Diego’s Age of Collapse, Burden of Beast, out now via Aborted Society, is the kind of food for thought that I need. People might label this band crust, but honestly I’m down to put a knife to the throat of boundaries, because this record is just kick ass music. As songwriters, Age of Collapse really know how to manifest captivating moments of honest emotion. A grand example of this is their tune “Hands Take That” – every second of this listening experience is fucking perfect. The intro is a erie walk in the woods, before these huge dirty guitar parts come into the air and are surrounded by dis-beat drumming. The riffage on this song is full of compassion and empathy, which is an ideal soundscape for an unforgettable vocal performance that shouts at humanity to wake the fuck up! Age of Collapse are masters at dipping angst in deep wells of dark melody to create a sonic wall of black magic that will have you under their spell for sure! When you hear the opening of “Final March,” you can totally envision the agony of the downpressed, and realize that they can’t stand for it any longer. The vocalist in this band sings from deep down in their life experiences, and you never feel like you are being preached too. As a whole, Age of Collapse seem like they wanted to make a statement with the release of Burden of Beast, and they fucking succeeded. What really impresses me about Age of Collapse is the level of honesty that this album has – they didn’t play it safe, they just decided to be themselves. In closing, every fucking song on this album is a fucking banger – real recognize real, support this band.

We have deployed all of the submissions we have received thus far to a drop point location, from which the mixtapes and discs will be transported to the punks in Aceh.  If you are wishing to send something directly, please email us at abortedsociety [at] hotmail [dot] com and we will let you know.  For those of you who have recently found out about the project and would like to continue to submit, we will accept further submissions until January 20th.  One caveat though, please don’t use this as an excuse to clear out your dusty tape collection.  We’d like to keep this personal if possible, and while it’s great you may have found a new home for that disheveled heap of tangled cassettes, it would be nice if these were intended for their recipients. First and foremost we’d like to personally thank each and every one of you who took the time to enter a submission.  We don’t have time to email all of you, but we have documented every single submission, and you can find images on this post or the one right before it to find yours to make sure it came in.  We had absolutely no idea how much support this would create, and were completely blown away by the massive amounts of email and messages we received.  People from Sweden, Norway, Finland, China, Japan, Mexico, Australia, UK, Germany — and several US States all sent submissions!  Also, for those of you kind enough to donate towards postage, it is extremely appreciated — you have no idea how much!  This is one of the first times I’ve ever witnessed the punk community come together on a global scale like this, and it was amazing seeing the amount of effort and love put into many of these mixes.  This is DIY culture at it’s apex, and it would be great to see more endeavors like this, even if not as a response/reaction to an adverse event such as what happened to the punks in Aceh.

Can one mixtape change the world?  Certainly not, but we personally can say that mixtapes have more than changed our lives, and we hope that this small token can show the punks in Aceh and the punks around the world that there is a global underground network ready and able to support one another.  Cheers to you all, and here’s to a new year of the punk underground!

The mixtape is a crucial part of our subculture, and is solely responsible for the spread of punk influence worldwide.  Mixtapes have introduced myself and many others to so many amazing bands, and the act of making them is one of the most sincere forms of friendship that exist in our world.  So, we are asking our friends, our community, and anyone else who remotely gives a shit to make and donate one mixtape cassette to the kids in Aceh who were forced into detention solely for being punk. It’s a small gesture, but it means a lot to people who need our support.  The content entirely of their choosing as long as it’s somewhat falling in the punk/hardcore/crust genre.  If you have an awesome tape you never listen to anymore, or would like to make a new one specifically for this endeavor, that would absolutely rule.  We are collecting these tapes to send out in early January, so your deadline to submit is December 30th, 2011.  We know that the post office is fucked right now with holiday shipping, but right after xmas it frees up largely, so it shouldn’t be too much of an issue.  Please try and pack as much music onto these tapes as possible, and try to avoid sending a short 10-min long demo cassette.  This is an out-of pocket initiative for me (Rob) personally, and I’d like to make what we send as substantial as possible.  And include your address in the tape, you might just make an international buddy out of the process!

***NOTE: Please do not send t-shirts, CD’s in Jewel Cases, vinyl, or anything else outside of a mixtape or a burned CDR in an envelope.  We need all submissions to be media so we qualify for the right shipping.  If you do send shirts or anything else we can’t use we will donate them elsewhere.  We only have the bandwidth to deal with qualifying media. Revolution is blowing in the air and it’s fucking getting me hyped for the change that must come soon! For too long, the voices of dissent have not been heard, but this isn’t the case right now with all the positive movements for human justice that are taking place worldwide. I can’t speak for everyone, but I can speak for myself – music has always been my lifeline to social justice. I believe that one of the major things that scared the LAPD about the punk movement in the 80′s was the fact was that our scene called them and Reagan on their bullshit, so they had to bash our heads in! Anyway, I have said it before, one of our favorite American labels is Seattle’s Aborted Society, who are have been releasing crushing positive music since 1999. Their latest release from Portland’s Nux Vomica is a raging 7″ that has me saying I want more! This record will inject your brain with 12 minutes of off-the-hook metallic crust that will leave an indelible impression on your braincells with it’s mammoth sound. Nux Vomica’s vocals are beyond outstanding for a couple of reasons, the tone of his delivery is spot fucking on, totally raw. Something about the words that this band writes are uplifting, and inspires you to look at the world/humanity for what it is really about. Their songwriting is compelling and thought-provoking, and it’s pure sonic crust fury! Without skipping a beat, this band knows the value of melody and uses it as a weapon of change. Nux Vomica’s songs sound like they are well-built ancient audio castles that have ghosts as the gatekeepers to the afterlife. The song “Embrace the Cycles” is a killer journey that has all kinds of twists and melodic detours that keep you interested from the first sounds of feedback. The other thing about this composition is that once the drums kick in, the tune transforms into this black galloping horse that can’t be tamed and gives the oppressors a ride straight to hell! I could tell you more about the other song entitled “The Two,” but I won’t, because it’s your job to head over to Aborted Society support them and Nux Vomica.
